Although Rimsky-Korsakoff wrote this piece as a classical exercise, particularly for the piano, my memories of this piece have been augmented by a performance on a cornet by an icon of the Swingtime era of American popular music, Harry James. His rendering of this music became a signature piece for this artist. I suspect Spike Jones, another musician from that period, put his unique imprint on it, also. This music requires extremely sophisticated control of the instruments and a genuine musicianship that belongs to the top drawer practitioners of the field.
The bumble bee is a general name for several members of the Apidae insect family. The bee is a highly organized animal that creates a large family unit (bee hive) for the better of the individuals. Involved in their lifestyle is the gathering of flower nectar and pollen to provide food for the queen bee and the larval offspring. The scouting members fly far afield finding ideal fields of flowers. They report back to the bee hive and perform precise dances that explain to the other bees exactly where the special flowers are in relation to the sun . My design speaks to these concepts.
